Ajagba, Payano, Stanionis dominate in PBC fights

Efe Ajagba.0 - Ajagba, Payano, Stanionis dominate in PBC fights

Efe Ajagba, Juan Carlos Payano, and Eimantas Stanionis were all winners tonight in California.

Nigerian heavyweight prospect Efe Ajagba went to 9-0 (8 KO) with a dominant performance against veteran Amir Mansour in tonight’s PBC on FOX opening bout, stopping Mansour after just two rounds.

Mansour (23-4-1, 16 KO) was down twice in the first round, totally unable to handle the power of Ajagba, which is no great surprise. Mansour is 46 years old now, and he’s just past the days when he can deal with that — even though he gave an effort and got through the second round, he and his corner called it off after two. There was just no competing with the bigger, younger, fresher Ajagba.

It’s a solid win for Ajagba, as Mansour was the first real pro he’d faced to date, and it’s a nice step for the 24-year-old bomber. It’s still up in the air as to what sort of true upside he has, but we’ll find that out in due time. So far as a pro, he’s done what he’s supposed to do.

Former bantamweight titleholder Juan Carlos Payano proved a step way too far for prospect Damien Vazquez. Payano blew Vazquez out, winning on scores of 79-73, 80-71, and 80-71 over eight rounds. BLH had it 80-71 for Payano.

Payano (21-2, 9 KO) was coming off of a 70-second KO loss to Naoya Inoue last October, but totally controlled this fight, smashing the 21-year-old Vazquez (14-1, 7 KO) with his left hand over and over and over again. The most damage Vazquez did came via his head.

Lithuanian welterweight prospect Eimantas Stanionis stayed undefeated, moving to 8-0 (5 KO) with an eight-round decision win over Sammy Figueroa (11-2, 4 KO).

Scores were 80-72 across the board for Stanionis, which is basically the only score you could have. BLH also had it 80-72. It was an entertaining if one-sided fight. Stanionis will at least become a fun TV fighter, may or may not have upside beyond that. He’s only 24, but you get the feeling he sort of is who he is.
