Johnathon Banks, GGG’s new trainer, wants to see him throw more punches.

Gennadiy Golovkin announced that Johnathon Banks will be his new trainer going forward, starting with his June 8 return on DAZN, and both were in Las Vegas for the Canelo-Jacobs fight, possibly scouting the likely future opposition.

Banks, who has trained Wladimir Klitschko and Cecilia Braekhus, says that he wants to see more activity from GGG (38-1-1, 34 KO) in future fights.

“Right now we’re working on his activity in the ring, getting him to be a little bit more active,” Banks said. “That’s the immediate goal right now. Throwing more punches, being more active, making his opponent be a little bit more weary of not just one punch, but multiple punches.

“In my opinion, when you’ve got a guy that’s coming to you, you know he can punch, he’s throwing multiple punches, it makes the opponent react completely different. Your opponent has nowhere in the ring he can relax, only time he can relax is once the round is over with. That’s how uncomfortable you want to make your opponents in the ring.”

The trainer, who will turn 37 this summer, also believes he can help sway the outcome if and when Golovkin gets his third fight with Canelo Alvarez.

“I definitely feel I can add something to make him look better in the fight, to make the fight go GGG’s way,” he said. “I just like activity. I want to see him a little bit more active. Both fights were really good, both fights were competitive fights. I wouldn’t want to be a judge on either fight, because they were hard fights to judge.”
