Broner has once again avoided serious jail time.
Adrien Broner was due to start trial in Cuyahoga County, Ohio yesterday on felony charges of gross sexual imposition and abduction, but ESPN reports that Broner instead plead out to two misdemeanor charges of assault and unlawful restraint. The case stemmed from an incident last June where a woman accused the fighter of forcibly kissing her at a nightclub.
The woman specifically accused Broner of popping up on her unexpectedly while at a downtown Cleveland nightclub last summer, deciding to lay on her before starting to forcibly kiss her on the mouth and neck. A friend of the woman is said to have tried to pull Broner off but was unable to.
With Broner pleading guilty to lesser charges, a county judge out of Ohio, Sherrie Miday, sentenced Broner to a suspended six month jail sentence, leaving Broner with two years of probation. Broner will be allowed to serve his probation in Broward County, Florida (where Broner often trains) so long as local officials there agree to supervise the terms of his probation.
In addition to Broner’s probation, he was also ordered to pay a $1,000 fine and reimburse the victim over $4,200 in medical bills. Broner’s attorney released this statement following the judgement:
“While confident in a successful outcome at trial, Mr. Broner opted to accept the significantly reduced misdemeanor plea so that he could immediately return to focus on his professional career free from further distraction,” Ian Friedman, Broner’s attorney, said in a statement, according to Cleveland.com.
So yet another sexual assault case down for Broner. The troubled fighter was also accused of inappropriately touching another woman last year, allegedly groping a woman’s genitals while at an Atlanta mall. The charges in that case were recently dropped after prosecutors decided there wasn’t enough admissible evidence to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that Broner did in fact grab the woman’s vagina.
But hopefully all of this will teach Broner to keep his hands to himself when he’s outside the boxing ring. Hell, he hardly uses them when he’s inside the ring, so you’d think it’d be second nature by now.
