“Chocolatito” is coming off of knee surgery.

Former four-division titleholder Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez is now healthy after surgery on his knee, which scrapped a fight in December on the final HBO boxing card, and his manager says that the former pound-for-pound ruler is looking to fight again in June.

Gonzalez (47-2, 39 KO) looked like his career had potentially hit the wall at super flyweight. After beating Carlos Cuadras for the WBC belt at 115 pounds, he lost a controversial decision to Srisaket Sor Rungvisai in March 2017, and then was brutalized by Srisaket in the rematch six months later, knocked out in the fourth round.

But after a year off, he returned to action last September and stopped Moises Fuentes in the fifth round, establishing that he is still a contender in one of boxing’s more exciting divisions. At 31 and fighting at what is probably the highest weight where he can seriously compete, he’s certainly not in his prime anymore, but Gonzalez can still go. He physically just doesn’t match up well with Srisaket, but he’d still probably be a good opponent for basically every other top fighter in the division.
