“The much-discussed showdown between Ryan Garcia (20-0, 17 KOs) and Luke Campbell (20-3, 16 KOs) has been set in stone for Saturday, Dec. 5, in a 12-round fight for the interim WBC lightweight title.” So states DAZN’s news site in a release that was published this morning. This, on the face of things, at least, is a very good matchup. The cocky, popular, media savvy Garcia has been waiting for a significant fight while the talented Campbell is eager to bounce back from a UD loss to Vasyl Lomachenko last year.

“I’ve been eagerly waiting to get back in the ring and have been working harder than ever to get here,” the article quotes Garcia as saying. “It’s been a tough year for everyone, but I’m excited to bring the fans an escape for the night… or based on my track record, a few minutes at most.” There’s little doubt that Garcia can back up his bluster with thunderous punching power and a 20-0 record. In fact, all but three of the 22 year old’s opponents have been knocked out. Garcia is, in brief, an exciting fighter in an era that desperately calls for one.

The 33 year old Campbell, on the other hand, has faced some major competition, such as Lomachenko and Jorge Linares. He may have lost against his two most illustrious opponents, but one can learn a learn a lot from a loss – and Campbell has lost to the best. Like Garcia, the Englishman has potent power. All but four of his 20 wins have come by knockout. Campbell is also determined to finally win a major title. A win against a hot new up and comer like Garcia will certainly help the man achieve his longtime goal.

“2020 has been an extremely tough year for everyone, so I’m really pleased we can finally get this fight officially on and give the fans something to look forward to,” Campbell, who won a gold medal at the 2012 London Olympic Games, is quoted in the article as saying. “There’s been a lot of talk and he’s clearly a very highly regarded fighter, but I’m going to prove that this is far too much, far too soon and that I’m on a completely different level.”

This fight is not only good news for Garcia and Campbell, it’s also good news for DAZN, and Garcia promoter Oscar De La Hoya. Canelo Alvarez, possibly the sport’s biggest star, is taking DAZN and De La Hoya’s Golden Boy promotions to court. That means Canelp won’t be fighting on DAZN, which has a contract with the man worth hundreds of millions of dollars, anytime soon.
