Dorticos aburptly ended a cagey fight with a monster right hand in the 10th.

Yuniel Dorticos (24-1, 22 KOs) lived up to his ‘KO Doctor’ nickname today in the World Boxing Super Series’ seminfinal, brutally knocking out Andrew Tabiti (17-1, 13 KOs) in the 10th round to win the IBF cruiserweight title. With the win Dorticos punches his ticket to the tournament’s finale.

The styles clash in this fight was apparent from the beginning, but didn’t lend itself in a way that made it an aesthetically pleasing fight. There was a lot of holding and posturing, but Dorticos was consistently the aggressor in the fight, with Tabiti managing to keep from taking big punches for the most part but his own offense was pretty muted. In the sixth round an exchange caused a head clash which left a nasty cut over Dortico’s right eye. It appeared the fight was close to being stopped right there, but Dorticos opted to continue and didn’t take his foot off the gas pedal.

Tabiti would pick up his work rate in the second half, but then in the 10th Dorticos landed a perfectly timed right hand square on Tabiti’s jaw, putting him down and out…

The official time of stoppage was 2:33 of Round 10. Tabiti would get up a couple of minutes later and at least appeared to be in relatively good condition considering the knockout. Dorticos was very emotional in the post-fight interview, excited to get a chance to win this tournament after falling short in the inaugural season. He’ll probably need some time to let that cut clean up before fighting again, though. Meanwhile Tabiti, obviously, will have to go back to the drawing board following an ugly stoppage loss.
