The fight will be Estrada’s first super flyweight title defense
ESPN reports that Juan Francisco Estrada will defend the WBC super flyweight title he recently claimed from Srisaket Sor Rungvisai on August 24th in his native Mexico, headlining a DAZN card alongside top heavyweight prospect Filip Hrgovic. The fight will be Estrada’s first in his home country since 2017.
Estrada (39-3, 26 KO) still has plenty of time to take care of his mandatory obligations and probably won’t face a particularly dangerous opponent in a homecoming fight, but seeing as most of this card is TBA, let’s have a look at the rankings to fill space. Sor Rungvisai remains number one, followed by Roman Gonzalez, Andrew Moloney, Donnie Nietes, and Francisco Rodriguez Jr. My money’s on either Gonzalez or Nietes before year’s end.
Hrgovic (8-0, 6 KO) claimed bronze in Rio and has thus far passed every test as a pro, most notably stopping Amir Mansour in three last September. He last competed almost exactly a month ago, flattening Gregory Corbin on the card that was supposed to feature Oleksandr Usyk’s heavyweight debut.
