The middleweights headline two nights before Canelo-Jacobs in Las Vegas.

Canelo-Jacobs fight week has another event coming your way, as Golden Boy presents a fight card on Thursday, May 2, two nights before the big show on DAZN, with Yamaguchi Falcao facing Christopher Pearson in the main event of a show that will stream live on Facebook.

Falcao (16-0, 7 KO) won bronze at the 2012 Olympics as a light heavyweight representing Brazil. He turned pro in 2014 and has moved quite slowly. At this point, he’s 31 years old and we’re getting to “now or never” territory for him to actually be a contender at 160.

Pearson (16-2, 12 KO) is a 28-year-old Ohio fighter, at one time a Mayweather Promotions prospect. He’s won two straight following a KO-2 loss to Justin DeLoach in Feb. 2017, which was his last fight on a Mayweather card. His last two outings have seen him stay busy with fights in unusual boxing settings, one in Kingston, Jamaica, and the other in Indiana, if you can believe such a thing.

Falcao and Pearson met in the World Series of Boxing as amateurs back in 2011, with Pearson winning a split decision.

“I know him from the Olympic trials, and this match is personal,” Falcao said. “I am focused and ready to deliver an explosive performance and show the world that I am ready and willing to compete for a world title. All we need is the opportunity, and we will fight any top-ranked boxer in the world.”

“I look forward to putting on an impressive performance May 2 and most importantly to getting my hand raised,” Pearson said.

The undercard is also coming together:

  • Montreal middleweight Steven Butler (26-1-1, 23 KO) will be in action in a 10-round fight, opponent to be determined. Butler, 23, has won eight straight, all by stoppage, following a TKO-7 loss to Brandon Cook in 2017.
  • Middleweight Erik Bazinyan (22-0, 17 KO), born in Armenia and based in Quebec, will face Alan Campa (17-4, 11 KO) in a 10-round bout. Bazinyan, 23, is a solid prospect. The 27-year-old Campa is a fairly familiar name; he’s lost two of his last three to D’Mitrius Ballard and Jesse Hart, and was stopped in four by Sergiy Derevyanchenko back in 2015.
  • Featherweight Francisco Esparza (9-0-1, 3 KO) of Las Vegas will take on Armenian Aram Avagyan (8-0-1, 4 KO) in an eight-round fight.
  • Junior middleweights Richard Acevedo (4-0, 4 KO) and Mario Sosa (3-1, 3 KO) will square off in a four-round fight. Acevedo is another fighter out of Garden City, Kansas, now based in Oxnard, California.
  • Alexis Salazar (21-3, 9 KO) meets Abraham Cordero (13-3-2, 7 KO) in an eight-round middleweight bout.
