If Canelo is going to fight Callum Smith, Smith’s trainer thinks it has to happen this year.

Canelo Alvarez is working on a Sept. 14 return to action, and there’s been talk of him also fighting in December. If Alvarez is going to fight WBA super middleweight titleholder Callum Smith, Smith’s trainer Joe Gallagher thinks one of those dates has to be with his guy, or that it’s not going to happen at all.

“I think the Callum Smith-Canelo fight has to happen either now or in December. If it doesn’t happen then, then I don’t think it will ever happen. Canelo needs to win a genuine 168 world title and Callum is the No.1 and I think that’s the fight that makes sense. … If you want to fight Callum Smith, then make an offer, if you don’t then forget about it and it will never happen and we’ll move on and do what we need to do.”

Smith (26-0, 19 KO) is coming off of a June 1 win over Hassan N’Dam, a third round wipeout where N’Dam was down in each frame. Alvarez (52-1-2, 35 KO) last fought on May 4, beating Daniel Jacobs by unanimous decision.

Gallagher has mentioned recently that he thinks the fight will happen in December if it’s going to happen, with September seemingly ruled out. But Alvarez is going to fight in September, and we’ll see what he does — there have been negotiations with Gennadiy Golovkin, Demetrius Andrade wants the fight, Sergey Kovalev and Jaime Munguia have reportedly been given offers.

As for Smith, he’s received an offer for a 168-pound unification with Billy Joe Saunders.
