The card takes place July 27th in Davis’ native Baltimore

Gervonta Davis’ July 27th title defense against Ricardo Nunez will be joined on Showtime by a pair of lightweight bouts. One pits faded former champions Yuriorkis Gamboa and Roman “Rocky” Martinez against one another, while the other sees rising prospect Ladarius Miller take on former super featherweight champion Jezreel Corrales in a genuinely interesting crossroads fight.

Gamboa (29-2, 17 KO) and Martinez (30-3-3, 18 KO) have seen better days, to say the least. The 37-year-old Gamboa won what could charitably be described as a bogus majority decision over Jason Sosa two fights ago, then defeated Miguel Beltran Jr. in November to extend his winning streak to three. Once feared for his power, “El Ciclon de Guantanamo” has scored just one finish in the last eight years.

Martinez, 36, suffered a destructive knockout loss to Vasiliy Lomachenko in 2016 and didn’t return to action until this past March, when he handed William Gonzalez his fifth consecutive loss.

I mean, it makes sense from a matchmaking perspective, but I’d really rather not see either of these two take any more punishment.

Miller (19-1, 6 KO) vs. Corrales (23-2, 9 KO) is easily the best fight of the three. Miller’s current 10-fight winning streak includes a decision over Jamel Herring, while Corrales, despite a strong run at 130 that saw him twice defeat Takashi Uchiyama, missed all of 2018 and remains an unknown quantity at 135.
