Ryan Garcia delivered again tonight on DAZN.
20-year-old lightweight prospect Ryan Garcia is something of a social media sensation, but the real question now is whether or not he can really fight. To date, it looks like he can.
Tonight in the DAZN main event from Indio, Calif., Garcia (18-0, 15 KO) ripped through Puerto Rico’s Jose Lopez (20-4-1, 14 KO) in just two rounds.
Garcia and Lopez were both throwing shots in the first, with Garcia getting the better of it, but Lopez showing a clear game plan of trying to put pressure on the young fighter. The fight continued along like that in the second, until in the final minute of the round, Garcia just unleashed a massive flurry of offense at Lopez, dropping him with a right uppercut.
Lopez did get up, and he made it to the bell, but the fight was stopped in his corner after the round.
“I’m showing everybody that I need to step up the competiton, because the more I get better, the opposition has to get better,” Garcia said after the fight. “Do I think I’m ready for a world title this year? Hell yes!”
Canelo Alvarez was also in attendance. The two share a trainer and have worked together recently.
“He’s learning a lot. I’m very impressed,” Alvarez said through a translator. “I think he’s the best prospect today.”
Promoter Oscar De La Hoya isn’t committing to Garcia being ready for a world title fight, but he says the path is set.
“He’s on his way. He proved it again tonight,” De La Hoya said. “There’s a lot of fans that want to see him win that world title, and believe me, it’s gonna happen. It’s gonna happen sooner than later.”
