The winner will become the mandatory challenger for either Vasiliy Lomachenko or Luke Campbell

Canelo Alvarez’s yearly Mexican Independence Day appearance could have a quality preamble this time around. Eddie Hearn tells ESPN that he intends to pit Devin Haney against Zaur Abdullaev on in a WBC lightweight final eliminator on September 13th, one day prior to Canelo’s expected appearance. The fight would take place in Las Vegas and air on DAZN.

Haney (22-0, 14 KO) vs. Abdullaev (11-0, 7 KO) was one of two bouts the WBC ordered alongside the Vasiliy Lomachenko-Luke Campbell vacant title fight, the other being Teofimo Lopez vs. Javier Fortuna. As Lopez instead set his sights on the IBF belt, it looks as though this will determine either Lomachenko or Campbell’s first WBC mandatory.

Of course, considering said winner will have three sanctioning bodies to appease, it may be a while before Haney or Abdullaev gets a crack at him.

Still, this is an excellent clash of strong, young fighters. The 20-year-old Haney would be the division’s #1 prospect if not for Teofimo Lopez, recently obliterating Antonio Moran in Oxon Hill, while Abdullaev boasts wins over Deiner Berrio and Hank Lundy in his two years as a professional.

Sounds like a perfect Friday evening attraction to me.
