Johnson landed hard shots early and often and put Monaghan away.

Callum Johnson got back in the win column tonight on DAZN, stopping Seanie Monaghan very early in the third round. Johnson (18-1, 13 KOs) was coming off his first professional loss to Artur Beterbiev last October, but said that he had his confidence heading into this fight.

From the the opening round Johnson displayed the power advantage he had over Monaghan, strafing him with shots to the head and body which had Monaghan’s face marked up early. By the second round Monaghan was bleeding a lot and looked like he’d already been through a 12-round slugfest.

Johnson would drop Monaghan twice in the second round, and that’s where it appeared the fight should be stopped — considering the condition Monaghan was in. Monaghan was sort of saved by the bell following the second knockdown so he got a minute to try to recover and came back out for the third.

But right as the third round opened Johnson jumped right on Monaghan and hit him with a barrage of punches that forced the referee to step in to halt the fight. The official stoppage came 23 seconds into Round 3.

At age 37 Monaghan (29-3, 17 KOs) might be on his last legs as a professional fighter. He’s lost two straight and his best days are clearly behind him. But as for Johnson, he says he’ll be targeting the best light heavyweights out there.
