The winner claims the vacant WBC lightweight title

Crisis averted.

Vasiliy Lomachenko and Luke Campbell have come to terms for their vacant WBC lightweight title fight, narrowly avoiding a purse bid. The two will duke it out on August 31st in the U.K.

The bid was originally scheduled for last Friday, but the two parties requested an extension to Wednesday (June 26th) in order to finalize the deal.

Though there’s no official word on the precise location yet, Eddie Hearn has been clear that he intends to stage it at the O2 Arena in London. Hearn also stated that Charlie Edwards’ mandated flyweight title defense against Julio Cesar Martinez, which also avoided a purse bid recently, could take place on the card.

The critical piece of information we’re missing: the network. I think we can safely assume it’s ESPN/ESPN+, though; Hearn was certain that the fight would take place Stateside if they went to a purse bid, so Top Rank had to get something in exchange for staging things across the pond. The fight will be Lomachenko’s first time fighting outside the United States since 2014.

As always, we’ll pass along relevant information as it comes along. For now, let’s jsut get excited over a fight that features three combined Olympic gold medals.
