Jessie Magdaleno won the battle of former super bantamweight titleholders.

Jessie Magdaleno and Rico Ramos are both former super bantamweight titleholders, but at very different stages of their careers, and that was quite clear over 10 rounds tonight, as Magdaleno outpointed Ramos to win in his official move to featherweight.

Magdaleno (26-1, 18 KO) won on scores of 97-93, 98-92, and 99-91. BLH scored it 99-91 and 100-90 for Magdaleno.

Magdaleno, 27, hadn’t fought since losing his 122-pound belt in an upset to Isaac Dogboe in April 2018, and did show a bit of rust. But the ever-languid Ramos (30-6, 14 KO) did nothing to really challenge Magdaleno, either, making it a relatively easy night of work for a bounce-back fight and a move to a new weight class.

Ramos, 31, won a title at 122 back in 2011, scoring a knockout over Akifumi Shimoda in an HBO-televised fight. But if you remember that fight, you remember that the knockout is about all he did in that fight, too. And ever since then, when put in front of the bright lights, he’s turtled up. He did the same thing again this evening.

Magdaleno outworked Ramos significantly, landing 130 of 450 (29%) total punches, and 110 of 251 (44%) power shots. Ramos was his usual quiet self, totaling 43 of 327 (13%) total punches landed, and just 32 of 222 (14%) of his power shots. Magdaleno landed 64 body shots compared to just three for Ramos.

“It was a long layoff. I took a year off and I came back against a tough veteran,” Magdaleno said after the win. “I take my hat off to him, he’s a tremendous fighter. He’s a former world champion. But one of us has to climb up, and tonight that’s me.”

Asked how quickly he wants to try for a second world title, Magdaleno didn’t sound to be in any hurry to rush into the fray against Top Rank featherweights like WBO titleholder Oscar Valdez or new signing Carl Frampton, which is probably smart. He’s got time to make all the adjustments he may need.
