Another veteran crumbled at the heavy hands of Vergil Ortiz Jr.

Blue chip welterweight prospect Vergil Ortiz Jr stayed perfect as a pro tonight, improving to 15-0 (15 KO) with a fifth round stoppage of veteran Brad Solomon.

Ortiz, 21, may be the best and most exciting prospect in boxing right now. Golden Boy have purposely tried to find opponents who can last with the Texan this year, but none of them have been able to make it too long. Mauricio Herrera fell in three on May 4, Antonio Orozco in six on Aug. 10, and now Solomon (28-2, 9 KO) goes down in five. None of those men had ever been stopped.

Solomon went down in the fourth round on a hard jab, but Ortiz said after the fight, watching the replay, that he thought he might have accidentally tripped Solomon on that knockdown. But in the fifth round, he forced Solomon to a knee twice, and the fight was stopped at 2:22.

It was a legitimate effort from Solomon, for the record. He tried to frustrate Vergil early, and when that didn’t seem to be working out terribly well, he did go out there and throw his hands. He was outgunned with that approach, but he gave it an honest go.

“He was pretty difficult to figure out. He kept me at bay and really made me use my brain,” Ortiz said after the fight. “I had to figure out the range. I just had to use my smarts, figure out when was the right time to throw a punch.”

The sky seems to be the limit for the thrilling young fighter, who can box, has a really good attitude, and is by all accounts very dedicated. 2020 could be an exciting year for him, and for fight fans.
