Shawn Porter takes on Yordenis Ugas in Saturday’s PBC on FOX main event.

Shawn Porter is set to defend his WBC welterweight title this Saturday night in a PBC on FOX main event against Yordenis Ugas, and Porter makes clear that he won’t be overlooking the Cuban challenger, and that he’s aiming to put on a statement performance.

“Ugas is overlooked by most of boxing, especially my weight class. You’re looking at myself and you’re looking at the other big names. If you’re not one of the big names, it’s, like, ‘Why would you fight that guy?’ There’s Keith Thurman, there’s Errol Spence, Pacquiao now and so forth. Yordenis is overlooked. Everybody’s expecting me to dominate him.

“But if I don’t dominate him, everybody’s gonna ask the questions: what happened, why, so forth. So I’m expecting to come in, have a dominating performance, hit him, hit him hard, get him out of there, and send a message to the rest of the division that I’m not a champion by accident.”

Porter (29-2-1, 17 KO) is, of course, exactly right. Though Ugas (23-3, 11 KO) has been on a good run and has clawed his way into this bout, Porter really has nothing substantial to gain and everything to lose here. He’s the clear favorite, he’s considered one of the true top welterweights, and Ugas is seen as a second-tier guy, someone Porter should beat without question.

All the pressure is on the 31-year-old Porter. Not only does he have to win, but to really impress people, he’s going to have to win handily. And if he does that, then a lot of people will just say that Ugas isn’t any good, so ultimately, with at least some people, this is a no-win situation for Porter.

So in the end, all Porter can really do is go out there, do his job, and look to move forward. If he wins as anticipated and winds up fighting Thurman or Pacquiao or the Spence-Garcia winner next — or even a rematch with Danny Garcia, perhaps — the response will still be there for the bigger fight.
