The top domestic super middleweight in the UK has signed with Matchroom.

British and Commonwealth super middleweight champion Lerrone Richards has made the move to Matchroom Boxing, after coming into his own under the watch of Queensberry Promotions.

Richards has signed a reported multi-fight deal with Matchroom, who are either extremely excited about signing Richards, or they’re just doing a new thing with introducing their signings, because Richards got a cool video instead of just the standard JPEG:

The 28-year-old “Sniper” won the vacant Commonwealth title in Apr. 2019, beating Tommy Langford over 12 rounds, and added the vacant British title in Nov. 2019, winning a decision over Lennox Clarke. He’s got a record of 13-0 (3 KO) since turning pro in 2013.

Richards has designs, of course, on getting onto the world stage, and feels Matchroom give him the best shot of doing that:

“I wanted a fresh start now that I’m top of the domestic tree. You look at Matchroom and they’ve got all of the top boys and I want to be part of this, and I want to be involved in big fights in the future. … I’m ranked in the top 15 in the world with the WBO. There are other governing bodies as well, that I would like to get highly ranked in to chase these champions.”

Richards’ only two fights of serious note are, in fact, his decision wins over Langford and Clarke, but he definitely has talent. The southpaw can box and he can move, looks very slick and clever at times, but it does have to be said that his lack of big power could be a hindrance as he faces better opposition. He doesn’t seem to be looking to rush into fights with the very top super middleweights, but if he keeps winning, obviously he’s going to get there, and like with anyone, that will be the real test.
