It wasn’t the clearest win, and there will be disagreements, but Lamont Roach Jr kept his undefeated record.

Super featherweight prospect Lamont Roach Jr and veteran Jonathan Oquendo battled it out tonight in Las Vegas, with Roach winning by questionable unanimous decision, getting booed pretty heavily afterward by the crowd at T-Mobile Arena.

Roach (19-0-1, 7 KO) won on scores of 96-93, 97-92, and 97-92. Bad Left Hook scored the fight 95-94 for Roach and 95-94 for Oquendo.

Oquendo (30-6, 19 KO) started fast in this fight, putting some pressure on Roach and bloodying his nose in the first round. But the 23-year-old Roach did pick things up a bit in the second half of the fight as Oquendo, 35, began to fade a bit down the stretch.

I probably wouldn’t class this as a robbery, but Roach definitely got the benefit of the doubt on the cards. He had the better timing on counter shots, but Oquendo landed some good, hard shots, especially early on.

In the eighth round, referee Russell Mora took a point from Oquendo for leading with his head. This was also a very questionable call, though in the end not one that impacted the outcome.

“The fight played out good. I think I could’ve did better. I’m glad I got this experience, this is what we need to go up to the championship levels,” Roach said after the fight. “

Roach had the advantage on the CompuBox stats, at least by sheer amount of punches landed. He connected on 133 of 455 (29%) of his total punches, and 117 of 346 (34%) of his power shots. Oquendo was busier, going 115 of 558 (21%) overall and 102 of 443 (23%) on his power punches.
