The bout is an IBF eliminator at 135 pounds.

Matchroom Boxing have finalized plans for the IBF lightweight eliminator bout between Lee Selby and George Kambosos Jr, adding the bout to their Oct. 31 card, which will be headlined by the heavyweight fight between Oleksandr Usyk and Derek Chisora.

Selby and Kambosos were scheduled to meet earlier this year, after the fight was ordered by the IBF in Dec. 2019, but was then pushed back into July, and then an Oct. 3 date. But the fight was canceled, as the purse offers for the bout had dropped, and Kambosos’ team decided to take it back to purse bid.

Matchroom won the bid a few weeks back, which meant it would stay in the United Kingdom (there were reports Kambosos’ team hoped to take it to Australia), but also that Kambosos would indeed get a little more money than even the original purse he had agreed to, let alone the reduced purse that had come into play.

Selby (28-2, 9 KO) won a featherweight title in 2015, beating Evgeny Gradovich, and made four successful defenses against Fernando Montiel, Eric Hunter, Jonathan Barros, and Eduardo Ramirez before losing the belt to Josh Warrington in May 2018. Selby said then that making weight had become an issue, and he decided to jump all the way up to lightweight, skipping over the 130-pound division.

His two fights at 135 pounds haven’t exactly been dominant performances, as he edged past both Omar Douglas and Ricky Burns in 2019. At 33, the time for him to make a push for another world title is now or never, probably.

The 27-year-old Kambosos (18-0, 10 KO) has mostly fought at lower levels, but stepped up a bit last December with a win over Mickey Bey Jr, a split decision.

The winner will be in line for a shot at the Lomachenko-Lopez victor after those two meet on Oct. 17, but it’s just as likely they’ll wind up fighting someone for a vacant title, probably.
