Smith holds the WBA “super” super middleweight belt, Saunders the WBO version

Though he’s seemingly been supplanted by Sergey Kovalev on the Canelo Alvarez shortlist, Callum Smith still has options. “Mundo” tells talkSPORT that he’s received an offer from newly crowned WBO super middleweight champion Billy Joe Saunders for a big-time domestic clash, confirming Frank Warren’s report from last Friday.

“I do believe they have made an offer. I’m not sure the ins and outs of it. I do believe it was a 50/50 split on BT Sport pay-per-view. That is the only detail I know so far. We will speak through it (this week) and if that is the next move, then that is the next move.”

Smith (26-0, 19 KO) claimed the WBA “super” title last September by knocking out George Groves in the World Boxing Super Series super middleweight finals. Damn, that is a lot of “supers” in that sentence. In any case, he returned to action exactly one month ago on the Anthony Joshua-Andy Ruiz Jr. card, where he smoked former middleweight champion Hassan N’Dam in three.

He also sports victories over Rocky Fielding, Erik Skoglund, and kickboxing great Nieky Holzken.

Saunders (28-0, 13 KO) thrice defended the WBO middleweight title he took from Andy Lee, including a humiliatingly dominant decision over David Lemieux, before failing a drug test ahead of a planned defense opposite Demetrius Andrade. He made the move to 168 in May with a wide decision over Shefat Isufi to claim the sanctioning body’s belt, which Gilberto Ramirez had vacated (after some hesitation) in his own move to light heavyweight.

Smith would be quite the mountain for Saunders to climb; beyond being a light heavyweight just barely masquerading as a super middleweight, Smith would have four inches of height and seven inches of reach on the former middleweight. Props for bravery, I suppose.
