It’s not exactly the hottest trash talk ever, but the competitive spirit is clearly big in both.
Errol Spence Jr and Mikey Garcia are just days away from their highly-anticipated pay-per-view showdown from AT&T Stadium in Texas, and the two got together on Wednesday for their final press conference.
When asked if Garcia (39-0, 30 KO) is the toughest opponent he’s faced to date, Spence (24-0, 21 KO) kicked off a little back-and-forth between the two that counts for about as much fire as you’re going to get out of these guys.
Spence: “On paper, he is. I don’t know if he’s the toughest opponent until we get in the ring, you gotta ask me after that.”
Garcia: “On Saturday night, he’s gonna find out why I chose to fight him and why I picked this fight. Like all my other opponents, they don’t see anything flashy, they don’t see anything special, but when they get inside that ring they realize that I am special in a different way.”
Spence: “I’m not your other opponents. Stop talking about your other opponents like I’m one of them.”
Garcia: “But you will be another opponent on Saturday night.”
Spence: “We’ll see.”
Garcia: “Yeah, we will.”
Spence: “Keep that same energy. Keep that same energy you’ve been having.”
Garcia: “We’re gonna find out.”
Spence: “You wanna act all humble when you’re out here in front of me, but when you’re doing different interviews, you wanna talk trash. Your dad, your brother, you wanna say other things. But once you get here, you wanna be humble and show a lot of respect and things like that. Nah, keep that same energy that you had in Cali at your gym.”
Garcia: “It’s the same attitude I’ve always had. I’m very confident in my skills and my abilities. I know what I can do, I know what I gotta do on Saturday night.”
The Spence-Garcia pay-per-view starts at 9 pm ET on Saturday night, with the prelim show beginning at 8 pm ET on FS1.
