The original plan was for Vargas to fight Kell Brook

Former WBO welterweight champ Jessie Vargas was supposed to fight Kell Brook on April 26th in the former’s 154-pound debut, but since that fell through, they’ve gone in a somewhat less daring direction. Eddie Hearn tells AB Boxing News that he “thinks it likely” that Vargas instead fights Humberto Soto at a catchweight between 147 and 154.

Soto recently informed El Debate that he received an offer to face Vargas after his win over Brandon Rios and is waiting on their reply to his requested purse.

Soto (69-9-2, 37 KO) remains a tricky bastard at the age of 38, with his only losses in the last decade coming to a prime Lucas Matthysse and unbeaten Antonio Orozco, the latter of whom he arguably beat. Still, schooling Brandon Rios in 2019 does not an elite fighter make, and considering he did his best work at between featherweight and lightweight, pitting him against Vargas (28-2-2, 10 KO) at 150-152 pounds is laughable.

I guess they used up all the good matchmaking for the card with Sor Rungvisai-Estrada II and Roman-Doheny.
