NACL announces new PUBG league

The North American Collegiate League (NACL) has launched a new competition for the battle royale game PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG).

It has also been revealed that the not-for-profit organisation will operate alongside the Collegiate Battlegrounds Association to host the NACL PUBG League: Fall 2020 Series.

Players from across the 220 NACL partnered institutions will be eligible to participate in the league, which began its opening week of competition on October 19.

The competitors will battle it out for the opportunity to win a $1,000 (£762.83) cash scholarship, with the winners of the Fall 2020 Series receiving an invitation to the NACL Collegiate PUBG Grand Championships. The victor of the PUBG Grand Championships will receive an audition for Wolves Esports, the esports branch of Premier League club Wolverhampton Wanderers, under its PUBG division.

The four-week competition will be broadcast on the North American Collegiate League Twitch channel.

As per a release, the NACL also plans on hosting tournaments for Madden 21 and Rocket League throughout the final months of 2020.

While esports for the PC iteration of PUBG appears to have slowed drastically over the past year, organisations and tournament organisers have turned their attention to the mobile version of the game.

In March, ESL joined forces with Tencent to become a part of the PUBG Mobile esports circuit for 2020. Between March and September, the likes of soft drink brand Mountain Dew and wireless company Qualcomm Technologies unveiled partnerships for both domestic and international competitions.

Esports Insider says: Collegiate esports in North America continues to grow at an impressive rate. With the addition of PUBG to its offerings, the NACL is in a solid position to become one of the leading organisers in what has become a competitive market.
