After arriving from Bologna last summer for a reported fee of around £3.5m, Filip Helander’s debut season at Rangers struggled to really get going after a foot injury sustained in late 2019 cut his campaign short.
He made just 18 appearances across all competitions, with only eight of them coming in the Scottish Premiership. This season saw him start off the campaign on the bench, before making the starting line-up for the clash against Livingston.

And on Saturday evening against Hamilton, the Sweden international looked imperious at the back, dealing with everything that came his way, including an elbow to the face.
As per Sofascore, his 7.9 match rating was the joint-highest of any player on the pitch, boasting a 91% pass accuracy, making four tackles, and winning a mammoth 18 duels.

Every week. Big Helander took an elbow square in the chops and just spat the blood out and got on with it. Love to see it.

Some Rangers fans raved about Helander’s reading of the game in particular, with one supporter saying that whilst he may not have the pace, his defensive awareness more than makes up for it.

With three clean sheets in a row since he came into the starting line-up, it’s difficult for Steven Gerrard to now leave out Helander when picking his team.
The Swede has looked assured at the back alongside Connor Goldson, and with Rangers sitting pretty at the top of the table, Gerrard will surely not want to tinker any more with a winning side.
