Arteta questions Arsenal ‘mindset’, reveals key expectations not being met

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has called on his players to meet his “higher demands” if the Gunners are to make real progression this season.

Arsenal have shown promising signs of improvement since Arteta took charge last December. Indeed, Sunday’s win over Manchester United was their first away to a top-six rival in 29 attempts.

Their latest result on Thursday saw them beat Molde 4-1 in Europa League action, keeping them top of Group B.

Joe Willock and Nicolas Pepe scored but the Gunners were helped by two own goals. What’s more, both players missed further chances to add to their tallies.

As such, Arteta outlined after the game how his players must meet his higher expectations if they are to progress.

Asked how Pepe can force his way into the starting team, the manager said: “Consistency throughout the game, throughout 90 minutes, in every game, in the final third.

“The final product has to be better not just from him. We have to put higher demands at the moment. He scored a great goal and another assist and he can do more so he’s on the right path.

“In general consistency wise in the final third we have to finish more things better and we can improve a lot. That goes to every single player.

“Nico (Pepe) scored three goals and he could score 10. Willy (Willock) the same, three assists he needs 10. If we don’t have that mindset we can’t become the team we want to be.”

Willock and Pepe benefitted on Thursday as Arteta made 10 changes to his side. However, the likes of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Thomas Partey will start against Aston Villa on Sunday.

Luiz backs Willock to impress

Meanwhile, Gunners defender David Luiz says Willock has the mentality and ability to reach the top level.

The Englishman’s goal on Thursday was his second in the competition so far but he is yet to make a Premier League appearance this term.

Nevertheless, Luiz is confident that the forward will continue to impress his manager.
