Barcelona sporting director Eric Abidal has confirmed his interest in Inter Milan striker Lautaro Martinez.
The 22-year-old forward has hit eight goals in 16 appearances this season and his performances have seen Manchester United linked with a move for the attacker, with one report saying that the club had sounded out the club’s representatives over a summer move.
El Mundo Deportivo and Clarin both reported that the striker is a target for United, while FC Inter News also claimed that United and Barcelona were in the running for Martinez.
Calciomercato claimed that the Argentina forward had been identified by Barca as being the long-term replacement for Luis Suarez, who last week admitted it would not surprise him if the Catalan club were looking at a successor for him.
And Abidal has spoken fondly of the player, as cited by El Mundo Deportivo.
“Yes, he is a complete player,” Abidal said when asked about Martinez.
“I think he is performing at a great level. He is a player we know, there are other players who also have a lot of quality.
“I am transparent with the players and I have told Luis (Suarez) that we are looking at strikers, and he has accepted this because he wants what is best for the team.”
Martinez’s agent confirmed interest from Barca in July.
“Talk of Barcelona’s interest is true,” said Alberto Yaque. “No-one’s called us, but we know that they’ve been looking at him strongly. It’s true that Barcelona like him.”
Martinez’s current deal in Milan runs to June 2023 and El Mundo Deportivo have claimed recently that the striker’s release clause is €200m.
