“Can’t believe what I have heard”: Many Newcastle fans slam Graeme Souness’ “ridiculous” verdict

It’s safe to say it’s been a pretty good few days for Newcastle United.

The Magpies have endured a turbulent summer, which has seen the hope of Mike Ashley’s tenure at the club finally being over and a potential takeover revolution happening, being dashed.

Think you’re a big Magpies fan? Can you name these former players by looking at their careers? Go on, give it a go…

But with the signings of Callum Wilson, Ryan Fraser and Jamal Lewis, things are beginning to look up for Steve Bruce’s side, and they enjoyed the perfect start to the Premier League season on Saturday evening with a 2-0 win over West Ham.

There was a slight air of controversy over Newcastle’s opening goal however, with Sky Sports pundit Graeme Souness feeling that Wilson’s strike should have been ruled out for raising his studs in a dangerous way against Lukasz Fabianski.

And after hearing the former Magpies boss’ comments, fans of the Tyneside club flooded to Twitter to share their reactions.

A couple of Newcastle supporters suggested it is a bit of rich of Souness to call foul play, particularly given his own playing style.

Judging by the reaction of some of these Newcastle fans, there’s no love lost where Souness is concerned.

What is perhaps fair to say is that players have generally been penalised for raising their foot, and had the incident anywhere else on the pitch, it probably would have been called up.

But Newcastle got the rub of the green from the referee, and they’ve got three valuable points to kick-start the new season.
