Carragher warns of calamitous Klopp scenario without top new signing

Jamie Carragher feels Liverpool must bring in support for their famed front three, or risk a struggle for goals if one of the players suffers a serious injury.

Roberto Firmino, Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane have maintained a remarkable level of fitness since their arrivals.

Aside from small injuries, the trio have never spent a solid portion of time on the treatment table, adding to their reliability for Jurgen Klopp.

Indeed, they have coupled that with a fantastic goal record, with the players recently hitting a combined 250-goal tally. Salah began the season in blistering form on Saturday with a well-taken hat-trick.

While several pundits have feared a drop in motivation for the front three due to a lack of competition, Carragher feels the risk of injury alone is enough to warrant a new attacking signing.

However, the comments come amid speculation linking Thiago Alcantara with a move to Anfield.

“I know everyone’s getting excited about Thiago coming in. I think the excitement comes because he’s completely different to what Liverpool have in midfield,” Carragher said (via the Daily Express).

“Liverpool have plenty of numbers in midfield, much of a muchness in terms of a style of player, so Thiago could add something completely different. But numbers-wise for me it’s the attacking front three.

“I feel if one of the front three – and I said this last season, it hasn’t changed – if one of them were to go down with a serious injury, I think that would really hurt Liverpool and I think Liverpool would it find it really difficult really to go on and win the league or certainly challenge Manchester City.

“So I think someone to really challenge the front three because this team was built three or four years ago, this is the same team if you take away [Loris] Karius and bring in Alisson that got to the Champions League final in Kiev – not the one they won, the one they lost.”

‘LIVERPOOL NEED FRESHENING UP’

“That team has been together for so long now and it just needs a little bit of a freshen up. Not so much the starting XI but just that little bit of impetus, maybe challenge people within the dressing room,” Carragher added.

“I think that adds a little bit of freshness, not somebody to go right into the team.

“Maybe if Thiago came in you’d say that and he’d add something different but for me the front three is vital.”

Ironically, Liverpool passed arguably their toughest test without Firmino and Salah. Xherdan Shaqiri and Divock Origi were on hand to help the Reds beat Barcelona 4-0 at Anfield in the 2018/19 season.

However, doubts remain about the longevity of Shaqiri and Origi as top back-up. Indeed, Shaqiri only made six Premier League appearances last season.
