Catch emerges for Arsenal but deal look on as Dortmund make firm decision on Julian Brandt

Arsenal are reportedly ready to make a firm approach for Julian Brandt amid claims from Germany that Borussia Dortmund are prepared to let him leave this month – although there remains a caveat over the transfer.

Gunners boss Mikel Arteta has admitted the club will be busy in the January window. They have already shipped out Saed Kolasinac and William Saliba on loan deals.

And Arteta has confirmed that Arsenal’s first piece of business has been done. That’s after the Gunners landed a young Hertha Berlin defender arriving for a modest fee.

While clearing the decks is Arteta’s priority he is still in the market for a creative midfielder. With Mesut Ozil close to leaving, Arsenal want to add more flair behind their attack.

It was reported earlier this month that Arsenal have sounded out the German club about signing Brandt this month.

The 24-year-old has not delivered for Dortmund since arriving from Bayer Leverkusen for £22.5m in May 2019.

The Germany international arrived with a big reputation. However, he’s netted just eight goals in 64 games. As such, it was claimed BVB were ready to cash in on the player.

However, Bild now claim Dortmund have no plans to sell Brandt this window. It’s not all bad news for the Gunners though, with the paper stating they are ready to sanction his loan exit.

It’s reported the Bundesliga giants want Brandt to move out on a temporary basis in a bid to re-capture his best form. And that would prove the perfect scenario for Arsenal, who don’t have vast quantities of cash at their disposal.

Brandt tempted by Arsenal switch

Furthermore, Dortmund still believe Brandt can be a major star for them. They feel a change of scene, coupled with regular football, could bring out the best in him.

In addition Brandt is also thought to be keen on the move to north London. He has been courted by Liverpool in the past and has been known to have expressed an interest in playing in the Premier League.

All things considered, the deal looks do-able for all the aforementioned factors.

Dortmund sporting director Michael Zorc admitted he was aware of the rumours surrounding Brandt.

However, speaking to Kicker, he was quick to play down talk he could be sold to Arsenal.

“I read that too, I can’t say more about it,” Zorc said. “Nobody has contacted us and there is nothing on the table – and not even in the fax machine.

“That’s all I can say.”
