Celtic have been crowned the Scottish Premiership champions for the ninth successive season after the SPFL opted to end the 2019-20 campaign as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

The league was suspended on March 13 with eight games left due to the health crisis, and with the Hoops topping the league table with 13 points, the board decided they are worthy winners on a points per game basis.

Rangers had a game in hand and were insistent on finishing the campaign as they fancied their chances, but it wasn’t enough to stop the SPFL.

The Scottish Championship, League One and League Two have already been ended after a majority of the 42 SPFL clubs voted in support of the decision, and the board were also given the power to end the Premiership season if it became clear that the remaining fixtures could not be played.

The announcement will definitely not have gone down well at Ibrox, but Hoops legend Chris Sutton insists they wouldn’t have caught up with Celtic, reacting thus to the decision on Twitter:

Rangers were dealt a huge blow in their bid to call for an independent investigation into the governing body’s handling of the decision to end the season last week.

Only 13 clubs voted in support of their call for a resolution, with 27 clubs opposing the move while two chose not to vote.

It remains to be seen if Rangers will take their case to the Court of Arbitration for Sport or the civil courts if they aren’t pleased with the latest decision, but it’s safe to say Celtic have wrapped up nine-in-a-row.
