Ralph Hasenhuttl has let slip that Southampton have officially signed heavily-linked midfielder Ibrahima Diallo (via BT Sport).
The news comes after the Saints were said to have agreed £12million for the Frenchman following a pursuit for a Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg replacement. The Denmark international left the club earleir in this transfer window after Spurs came knocking for his services. His departure left a gap in Southampton’s team for a new No.6 and Diallo could be the man for the job.
Can Diallo replace Hojbjerg?
One position high on the list to be occupied for the Saints is their defensive midfield role. The South Coast club were keeping their options open and were considering a swoop for Liverpool castaway Marko Grujic. However, with reports claiming the done deal and Hasenhuttl confirming the news, we now know that Diallo will be the man to guard the Southampton defence this season.
The 21-year-old joins the Premier League outfit after spending his entire senior career in his home country. Diallo notched a total of 53 appearances for former club Stade Brest and will bring his capable passing ability and calm composure to St Mary’s.
In comparison to Hojbjerg, tallied a better passing percentage with 86% to the Dane’s 78.1%. He also registered the same amount of assists (1) despite playing a more defensive role than Hojbjerg for the 2019/2o season (via WhoScored).
Hasenhuttl has also made it known that he is hoping for more signings to come through the door before the transfer window closes tomorrow evening. After a strong start to the season which sees the Saints on a 50% win rate so far, new additions can only help strengthen their side in their fight to climb the table.
