Donny van de Beek has revealed that Steven Bergwijn asked him to join Tottenham Hotspur this summer.
Van de Beek became Manchester United’s first signing of the transfer window in early September. The midfielder moved to Old Trafford from Ajax for a fee in the region of £40m.
United beat off a lot of competition for the 23-year-old’s signature. Real Madrid were a particularly strong rival in the race to sign him – with his agent confirming he could have gone there had it not been for the pandemic.
However, van de Beek has now revealed that international teammate Bergwijn wanted him to move to Spurs instead.
Speaking while on duty with the Netherlands, van de Beek said his former Ajax youth clubmate – who joined Tottenham from PSV in January – sent him a message about his future.
He revealed: “I have to say that he just sent me a message: ‘Are you coming to us or not?’
“We often have contact. We used to play together at Ajax for a long time and have actually always kept in touch.
“I think we will see each other again soon.
“But I chose to join United. It’s a fantastic step, and I think now is the right time.”
Van de Beek and Bergwijn both featured in Holland’s win over Poland in the Nations League last week, with the Spurs forward scoring the game’s only goal.
Van de Beek a ‘panic buy’
Despite Man Utd’s impressive capture of van de Beek, one pundit thinks he is merely a panic buy.
Paul Merson recently claimed that United have too much depth in midfield to make van de Beek a player they needed.
He told the Daily Star: “I don’t get it. They just spent £40m on a position where they are already strong. And how does he play with Paul Pogba and Bruno Fernandes? You have to have someone who can play the holding role.”
