Everton learn new lower fee, as telling progress made in Man Utd raid

Everton have entered “very advanced” negotiations with Manchester United about a deal to sign Sergio Romero, according to a report.

Romero is one of a host of fringe United players the Red Devils are looking to move on this transfer window. The goalkeeper has slipped further down the pecking order after Dean Henderson’s Old Trafford return.

Recent reports suggested Everton have contacted United to register firm interest in the Argentina international.

According to Todofichajes, their interest has now taken a step forward. The source says Everton have now begun crucial final negotiations with their Premier League rivals to seal the move.

What’s more, the report quotes a fresh transfer fee for Romero. Previous reports suggested the 33-year-old could leave for £6million, with Todofichajes claiming the Toffees could sign him for £2.7million.

United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer offered his fringe players a warning on Friday about their hopes of securing game time.

He said: “It’s not my job to keep them happy, it’s my job to pick players for the club to get results.

“It’s their job to be fit and to work hard and to perform when called upon.”

Also among the list of players available to leave Old Trafford are Chris Smalling and Andreas Pereira.

Everton looking for Pickford support

Everton, meanwhile, are reportedly hunting a new goalkeeper to provide support for under-fire Jordan Pickford.

The England No 1’s form has dipped since the start of last season. Indeed, he was in the firing line once again in last weekend’s 5-2 win over West Brom.

Toffees boss Carlo Ancelotti, however, has insisted that Pickford will retain his manager’s full support.

Speaking in Friday’s press conference, Ancelotti said: “There is a lot of focus on him but, I have to be honest, he started really well and did a fantastic match against Tottenham.

“I am not really focused on him, like you (the media). He is a great goalkeeper. He has my total confidence.”
