Fernandes adamant Man Utd star can ‘do much better’ in time

Bruno Fernandes is confident Donny van de Beek will grow into his role and make a significant impact at Manchester United.

Van de Beek, 23, cost the Red Devils £40m when making the summer switch from Ajax to Old Trafford. The midfielder was a star at the Amsterdam outfit, bagging 41 goals from 175 appearances in all competitions.

Capped 14 times by the Netherlands, he helped the Eredivisie giants reach the Champions League semi-finals in 2018-2019.

Much was expected of the youngster after his move to the Theatre of Dreams but it has been an underwhelming start. Van de Beek has played just 60 minutes of United’s opening four top-flight games and has yet to start.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has preferred to use the schemer from the bench. However, Fernandes is adamant he will fulfil his potential.

“I hope Donny can do a lot of things for us and I’m sure he will do,” he said.  “Of course though every player has to take time to get settled in the club and I think he is doing well, but he can do much better for us and he also wants to do much better.”

United are languishing down in 15th spot in the table after four games but did beat Newcastle 4-1 last time out. Fernandes feels that will be a shot in the arm in the Champions League against PSG on Tuesday night.

“Of course. When you win your games always the confidence is higher,” he added. “I think everyone is confident about having a really good game.”

Europe a lifeline for Ole

A decent showing in the Champions League may be one way that Solskjaer can hang on to his job. With the vultures circling, an inauspicious start to domestic matters has heaped pressure on the Norwegian.

A surprise third-place finish in 2019-20 earned United a shot at Europe’s elite club competition. They face a tough baptism against one of the favourites for the competition.

The Parisians’ boss Thomas Tuchel let Edinson Cavani move to United but will not face him this week. The 33-year-old Uruguayan is not deemed ready for the trip to the French capital. Harry Maguire, Mason Greenwood, Eric Bailly and Jesse Lingard are also missing.

Things will not get any easier for Solskjaer’s troops when league action resumes at the weekend. Chelsea are the visitors on Saturday after they host Sevilla in the Champions League on Tuesday.
