Forget £17m target: Crystal Palace need to set sights on alternative reinforcements – opinion

According to Turkish outlet SporX, Crystal Palace are set to scout Fenerbahce’s Ozan Tufan, a central midfielder with the ability to fill in at right-back.

What’s the story?

With the transfer window just around the corner, speculation is beginning to build, and now it is being reported that Palace have targeted the 24-year-old.

Fenerbahce are reportedly looking for around €20m (£17m) for him, with Leicester City also mentioned as a potential suitor. The report adds that both teams are set to have a scout in attendance when Fener play Besiktas on Sunday.

Tufan is having a good season with the Turkish club. So far this campaign, he has picked up an average WhoScored rating of 7.15 in the Super Lig, managing one goal and two assists. Having played both at right-back and central midfield, he has a creative side to him, as his 1.3 key passes and 1.9 dribbles per match show.

Clearly, he would be a valuable addition, and would bring something to Roy Hodgson’s team, but his arrival would come in an area that is not the most in need of a new recruit. It is further forward, in the attacking positions, where the London outfit need to spend some money.

Did he really play for us?! No Palace fan has managed to name all of these obscure Eagles signings….

So far this season, the Eagles have struggled for goals. The 15 they have managed is less than every other team apart from Watford, who currently lie bottom of the table. Only six players have scored a goal for them, with Jordan Ayew leading the way with four. Their sturdy defence has seen them ship just 20 goals, but they are desperate for a marksman.

For €20m (£17m), Hodgson and co could bring in some real quality in that position. They have already been linked with Celtic’s Odsonne Edouard, the 21-year-old who has 13 goals and 14 assists in 28 matches so far this campaign. A recent report from The Sun has said that they are planning a £20m bid for the France U21 international in January, which is in a similar price range. His arrival would make far more sense.

That is not to say that Tufan should be totally overlooked but he should not be at the top of their wishlist.

A striker who can put the ball in the back of the net on a regular basis is far more urgent.
