Forget Koch: Orta could land Leeds perfect Cooper partner in “phenomenal” £20m titan – opinion

Leeds continue their inconsistent run of form after their latest fixture saw them fall at the hands of Crystal Palace. The Eagles hit them for four goals, delivering the Whites their second 4-1 defeat in a row. Their last five games have seen them win just once, suffering defeat three times and drawing the other.

Marcelo Bielsa has several issues he must address with his squad if he wants to ensure their survival this season. Leeds have made their return after a painful 16 years away from the Premier League, it simply cannot come to an end already.

The Whites have relied too heavily on Patrick Bamford for the past two games, which hasn’t been enough to see them bank a result. As such, a shake up in attacking personnel could be on the cards for the club, but the main problem is their leaky defence.

Should Leeds look to sign Ben White permanently?

During his loan spell with Leeds, Ben White turned a lot of heads following his participation in their Championship title season. The 23-year-old was an ever-present figure across all competitions last campaign and played every single minute in the league. His performances across the backline alongside captain Liam Cooper were remarkable.

EFL pundit Keith Andrews waxed lyrical over the Englishman on the Sky Sports EFL Podcast, labelling him a “phenomenal” player.

White contributed a goal and two assists, as well as an impressive 22 clean sheets (via Transfermarkt). And whilst Bielsa was keen to hang onto White and make the deal permanent, his parent club Brighton had reportedly demanded a mammoth £50million for his services.

Naturally, this was far too high an amount to meet and Leeds pulled out of the race. Even Premier League heavyweights like Liverpool were put off the defender due to the huge asking price. However, since then, Phil Hay has claimed that the Seagulls have dramatically lowered their expectations to £20million, which is a far more friendly sum.

Indeed, matching a fee of £20m is more likely for the Whites, who are currently in the bottom half of the Premier League table. A January swoop for the centre-back could be a potential scenario if Leeds continue their troublesome run of form.

White would likely replace the inconsistent Robin Koch, who has started every league game so far this season but has failed to go above and beyond with his performances. His most disappointing shift arguably came against Leicester. The German earned a measly Sofascore rating of 5.9 after making a costly error which led to a Foxes goal. He also lost possession 11 times and committed two fouls.

A restructure in defence could be what Bielsa needs to push on this season and ensure his side stays in the Premier League. Moving for White will definitely be a tough job, but one that will be worth it if they can pull off a transfer.
