Manchester City will not be looking to sign any players in the January transfer window, according to coach Pep Guardiola.
The Premier League champions had been linked with bringing in reinforcements in the New Year in an attempt to breathe new life into their faltering title challenge.
Guardiola’s side are currently 14 points behind leaders Liverpool and have already tasted defeat four times in the league this season, the same amount of games they lost in the entirety of the 2018/19 campaign.
Injuries to key players, most notably Aymeric Laporte, have contributed to City’s struggles this season, and it had been suggested they would look to add depth to their squad in the upcoming window.
However, a report on Goal states that Guardiola gave a very clear answer when asked about any possible business next month. They quote the Spanish coach as saying: “The players who start the season will finish the season. No business.”
With Laporte expected to be out until February and the defence struggling for consistency, a central defender was expected to be on the club’s wishlist, with Bournemouth’s Nathan Ake touted as a possible option.
Guardiola has also put a quick end to that speculation too, telling reporters “no, it’s not an issue” when asked about a move for the 24-year-old Dutchman in his pre-Arsenal press conference.
Choosing not to add to his defensive options could prove to be costly for the former Barcelona and Bayern Munich coach considering City have conceded 19 goals in the Premier League thus far and have failed to keep a clean sheet in any of their last ten games in all competitions.
