Hasenhuttl explains why he would turn down Man Utd if offered top job

Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhuttl said that he is focusing on the “special” project he is brewing on the south coast, after a question about taking over at Manchester United.

Hasenhuttl has caught the eye this season, with the Saints fifth in the Premier League table after nine games.

Indeed, they carried a spell of good form into the new season and sit three points behind leaders Tottenham. But Hasenhuttl’s recent record looks more impressive given the 9-0 hammering to Leicester last season.

Many clubs would have sacked their manager after such a result but Southampton stood firm – to good effect. As such, talk has surfaced from some pundits that the Austrian would be a good fit at Old Trafford.

Hasenhuttl, though, insisted in his pre-match press conference that he is not looking elsewhere for the moment.

“It is not something that I listen to. I don’t have social media and I don’t read the news,” the 53-year-old told reporters (via the Manchester Evening News).

“Sometimes I find myself sometimes listening to the radio when they speak about football. It’s interesting to hear them talking about it and analysing our game.

“I am much more interested in what is happening at our club, here at the moment.”

Hasenhuttl penned a new four-year deal at St Mary’s in June and expressed his excitement at what lies in store.

“I have signed a new contract. This is a long-term project for me and the way that we improving this club is something that gives me so much joy every day, it is so enjoyable.

“There is something special growing here at the moment and this is the reason why I decided to stay here for longer.”

Speaking in his pre-match briefing, Red Devils boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer had praise for his counterpart.

Indeed, he even compared the Austrian to Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp.
