Ian Wright claims Man Utd star made bad choice, should’ve joined rivals

Manchester United’s decision to sign Donny van de Beek has been called into question, with Ian Wright claiming the midfielder would have been better suited to joining a Premier League rival.

United announced the signing of the Dutchman earlier this month to further bolster their options.

However, it’s not been an easy window for United, who continue to struggle to attract their top targets. Hopes for Jadon Sancho continue to fade.

Even a United old boy exclusively told us the club were better spending their money elsewhere.

The arrival of Van de Beek at United though has also been questioned by Wright.

He joins the likes of Bruno Fernandes, Paul Pogba and Scott McTominay in fighting for game time. Fred and Nemanja Matic are other options for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer this season.

Van de Beek made his debut in Saturday’s 3-1 home defeat to Palace. He stepped off the bench and got his name on the scoresheet.

Despite his immediate impact, Wright is baffled by his signing. He claims United did not need Van de Beek and claims their style does not suit his game.

Furthermore, he believes Van de Beek should have joined Arsenal instead as he told The Kelly & Wrighty Show.

“Donny van de Beek, he’s someone that I wish someone more like Arsenal could have taken,” Wright said.

“When you look at Pogba, what he’s doing, and you look at Bruno Fernandes – that is Donny van de Beek’s position.

“So people are thinking they’re going to see Van de Beek [sitting] with Pogba and Fernandes, but I don’t think that’s going to happen.

“Because as much as he can play there, that’s not his preferred position to play.

“So again, spend the money, yeah he’s a great player and yes take him. But you’ve still got to look for the players that you know are going to improve your team.”

Wright added: “Listen, Donny van de Beek will be a good player for Man United in time because he’s a quality player. But is he what they need right now?”

Fellow pundit Micah Richards agreed with Wright and felt United bought him for the sake of it.

“Van de Beek, for me, was a panic buy. He’s got good ability. I’ve watched loads of clips of him and he is a good player, but…’ Richards said.
