Leeds turn to unwanted Leicester man after missing out on other targets

Leeds have turned their attention to Leicester winger Demarai Gray after missing out on Michael Cuisance and two other targets, according to reports.

Cuisance looked likely to become Leeds’ latest summer signing, but the Bayern Munich midfielder’s move collapsed due to a failed medical.

Marcelo Bielsa still wants to add a central midfielder as well as a winger. While Cuisance plays in the former position and Gray in the latter, Leeds are now ready to focus their energy on the Leicester man.

According to the Telegraph, Leeds will make a late push to sign Gray now that the Cuisance deal has fallen through.

Gray is in the final year of his contract at the King Power Stadium, where he has fallen down the pecking order.

The emergence of Harvey Barnes in recent years and the signings of Ayoze Perez last year and Cengiz Under this summer mean Gray’s chances of first team football at Leicester are slimming even more – after he only made three Premier League starts last season.

The former England youth international is now eager to find a new home where he will gain more playing time. And the Telegraph say he wants “a club that offers a good challenge and an exciting sporting project” – which Leeds could well fit after their dramatic return to the Premier League.

Leeds had also been looking at Tottenham’s Ryan Sessegnon and Manchester United’s Daniel James in their efforts to strengthen their flanks.

But both signings appear difficult, with the former now linked with a move on loan to the Bundesliga – to either Hertha Berlin or Hoffenheim, according to Sky Sports – and the latter unlikely to leave Old Trafford.

Leicester to leave Gray out of squad

It is not just Gray that wants to end his time at Leicester, but the club also.

The Mirror say Leicester are hoping to offload the 24-year-old before the transfer deadline, although they have not set a price tag for his signature. Last month, it was claimed that he could cost around £20m.

Gray was absent from Leicester’s squad for their win over Manchester City last weekend, and Brendan Rodgers is likely to overlook him again for their clash with West Ham on Sunday.

Previous reports suggested Tottenham had identified Gray as a potential target, having admired the winger for a long time.

The Mirror add that there is interest from Germany, although they do not mention any specific clubs.

But Leeds have now emerged as a prime suitor for the former Birmingham star. They want a right-footed winger for balance in the squad, and Gray could be the ideal profile for that role.
