Leicester target can be the man to lift goalscoring burden from Vardy’s shoulders – opinion

In the Premier League last season, no one in the Leicester side came close to matching Jamie Vardy’s record in front of goal.

After Brendan Rodgers arrived, he played like a man possessed, finding the net nine times in ten matches.

It was a phenomenal return from a player who had been left out in the cold by Claude Puel.

The Foxes’ second top scorer in the league last term was James Maddison, a man who finished with seven strikes to his name.

Despite how good he was creatively, the Midlands side could still do with someone capable of scoring more goals, particularly after losing Riyad Mahrez last summer.

Harvey Barnes was brought back in January but his impact was minimal despite finding the net on a regular basis for West Brom.

However, they could solve their issues and lift a big burden from Vardy’s shoulders by signing Ivan Perisic.

The Croatian is wanted by the Foxes according to Tutto Mercato Web who claim his journey at Inter Milan is likely to come to an end.

Across 34 Serie A matches in 2018/19, the Croatia international averaged 2.9 shots per game, a statistic that tells you all you need to know about his threat in the final third.

The player with the highest number of shots per match in the Leicester squad is Barnes who averaged 2.5 after being recalled over the winter.

However, he scored just once.

Therefore, Perisic, who found the net on eight occasions in Italy’s top division last term, would go a long way to solving a lack of goals out wide.

In a 1-0 defeat versus Parma back in September he took an impressive eight shots on goal.

Meanwhile, against Juventus in April, he had six shots. The same number was achieved against Roma a week previous when he scored in a 1-1 draw.

Perisic is a game big game player and even against sturdy defences as demonstrated in those final two stats, he still has an influence.

If Leicester are to challenge for seventh or finish even higher, a player who can regularly cause problems for the goalkeeper could prove the difference.

At 30 years of age, Perisic goes against the club’s philosophy of bringing through younger players, but it’s hard to argue with his qualities.

If they follow up in their interest and sign him, it would be an incredible coup.
