Liverpool planning audacious Tottenham raid with £54m-rated star reportedly ‘open to leaving’

Liverpool are weighing up an ambitious move for a Tottenham centre-half described as ‘open to leaving’ to solve their defensive crisis, claims a Spanish report.

Jurgen Klopp’s side have been rocked by a spate of injuries suffered by their defensive stars.

Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Trent Alexander-Arnold are all currently sidelined. Only the latter of that trio is expected to play a meaningful part in the campaign going forward.

The news has sparked debate as to whether Liverpool will remedy their woes with a January splash.

Jamie Carragher identified such a move as being crucial to The Reds’ title hopes, though the option of relying on the inexperienced pair of Nat Phillips and Rhys Williams still remains.

A wide selection of centre-backs have thus far been linked, ranging from Premier League stars to Champions League winners.

Now, Tottenham defender Davinson Sanchez is the latest to be mentioned.

Spanish outlet Don Balon (via Goal), report that Liverpool are ‘considering a move’ for the Colombian.

The 24-year-old – who it was recently suggested would prevent Tottenham from becoming title challengers – appeared to be firmly in Jose Mourinho’s plans at the start of the campaign.

However, following a run of four successive league starts, Sanchez has been missing from the squad in their last three.

The report describes the player as being ‘open’ to leaving Spurs, though a hefty fee of around £54m is touted as being required to secure his release.

Meanwhile, Tottenham manager Jose Mourinho insists he will not stand in the way of a possible return to Benfica for midfielder Gedson Fernandes.

Fernandes, 21, joined Spurs on an 18-month loan deal back in January this year. However, things have not gone to plan, with only 13 appearances in all competitions for the youngster.

Yet to make a Premier League start, he has featured for just 61 minutes in the top flight. It seems as though he is now surplus to requirements at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

The Portuguese tactician has a wealth of talent at his disposal in the middle of the park. Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Harry Winks, Moussa Sissoko, Giovani Lo Celso and Dele Alli are above Fernandes in the ranks.

Mourinho refused to be too negative about the Portugal international but hinted he could be on his way.

“For me it is never a problem, but a solution,” he told Sport TV. “Having him in the squad, even if he is not called up and not playing, is an extremely comfortable situation.
