Man City one of three powerful clubs with ‘concrete interest’ in reported Liverpool target

Manchester City are one of three clubs to have a “concrete interest” in David Alaba – but he would rather join Real Madrid or Barcelona.

Alaba is in the final year of his contract at Bayern Munich, where he has won an incredible 23 trophies. One of those was the Champions League last season.

Despite continuing to play a key part for one of Europe’s most successful clubs, Alaba could be coming towards the end of his time with Bayern. Little progress has been made over a potential renewal.

When the January transfer window opens, Alaba will be able to negotiate a pre-contract agreement with clubs outside Germany. He will likely have several suitors.

Liverpool are one of the clubs to have been linked with a move for Alaba. The Premier League champions could consider defensive reinforcements while Virgil van Dijk is out injured.

Monday’s papers pushed Liverpool’s interest further along, after it was claimed that Bayern had withdrawn their contract offer.

However, it has now emerged that a different Premier League team are weighing up a move for Alaba. According to Christian Falk of SportBild, the Austrian defender has three strong suitors – but Liverpool are not one.

Falk claims that Manchester City are in the hunt for Alaba, though. Pep Guardiola worked with the player at Bayern, and would be keen on a reunion.

Left-back has been something of a problematic area for Guardiola in recent years. Benjamin Mendy has suffered a number of injuries, forcing City to use the likes of Oleksandr Zinchenko, who is naturally a midfielder, out of position.

Alaba would help them rectify those problems, and can also provide cover at centre-back or in defensive midfield. Zinchenko may have to leave the club before they can sign Alaba, though.

City are facing competition from Juventus and PSG. The Italian champions do not have much depth at left-back, while their French counterparts are well aware of what Alaba can do after facing him in the Champions League final.

However, Alaba himself is holding out for a move to either of La Liga’s two main powers, Barcelona or Real Madrid.

At the moment, though, neither Barca nor Real have made a proposal. Therefore, City may have a chance of tempting him to the Etihad Stadium instead.
