A sensational 11 minute spell reaped four goals for Man Utd as the Red Devils booked their place in the Europa League round-of-32 as group winners.
With qualification already secured, a much-changed Man Utd hosted dutch side AZ Alkmaar with only the matter of who would win the group up for grabs.
An unremarkable first half was quickly forgotten when an electrifying period of attacking play proved too much for the visitors.
Captain Ashley Young opened the scoring after 53 minutes when a driven low cross from Juan Mata travelled all the way through to the veteran down the right flank. His rifled finish into the roof of the net from an acute angle opened the floodgates as Utd soon hit top gear.
Their lead was doubled five minutes later after tigerish work from James Garner dispossessed an Alkmaar player deep within his own half. Greenwood controlled quickly and unleashed a fierce drive past the stricken goalkeeper.
Within moments of the restart, Greenwood was causing problems again when the forward was brought down inside the area to win a penalty. Juan Mata duly obliged from the spot to make it 3-0.
It was then Greenwood’s turn again to notch when he received the ball in a seemingly unthreatening position down the right channel, but uncorked a pulsating low drive that flew past the AZ keeper at the near post.
The group-winning victory ensures the Red Devils will avoid the four seeded teams dropping down from the Champions League in the round-of-32 – Inter Milan, Benfica, Ajax and Red Bull Salzburg.
