Marina Granovskaia has another Chelsea transfer poser to resolve in January

Chelsea director Marina Granovskaia has another transfer issue to resolve in January with Olivier Giroud understood to be looking to leave.

The 34-year-old striker was close to leaving Stamford Bridge last January, but a talk with Frank Lampard persuaded the forward to stay.

That resulted in a new lease of life for Giroud, who ended up scoring eight goals in the final 13 league games to help Chelsea finish in the top four.

The former Arsenal man made 16 starts in all competitions last season, but he has slipped down the pecking order once again this term.

The arrival of Timo Werner has meant that Giroud has started just once in the EFL Cup. While his three sub appearances in the Premier League have not been enough to stop him getting itchy feet again.

Football London claim Giroud has one eye on leaving in January in a bid to secure some game time and his place in Didier Deschamps’ France’s squad for next summer’s delayed European Championships.

While on international duty last month, Giroud said (via Goal): “I’ve written a book called ‘Always Believe It’ so I’m not going to go anywhere without a fight.

“There is competition but I will fight and we saw the rewards of that at the end of last season.

“I am convinced that I have a role to play at Chelsea. We will see in January.”

Sky Sports Italia reported that Giroud had agreed a provisional contract with Juventus in the summer.

According to Gianluca Di Marzio, Juventus and Giroud had agreed in principle a two-year contract that would see him earn €4.5m net a season in Turin.

A move never materialised though for Giroud, whose contract at Stamford Bridge will expire next summer.

However, Giroud may well be more determined to push for a transfer in January and Granovskaia will have to make a decision on whether to let him leave.

Frank Lampard is unlikely to sanction a move and recently praised Giroud for his professionalism.

“He has given a typically great response to train as well as possible and support the group,” said Lampard.

“He is amazing around the group and that is just a fact with Oli and maybe not a fact with people all around the team.

“I can’t speak highly enough of him on that side. It is part of my job I don’t like with good players, top people who are around the group that don’t always play. But I have those issues.

“Tammy Abraham started at least half of the games last season and he was one of the top scorers in the Premier League.

“When Oli came in, he performed very well in the restart for us which was a huge factor in us getting into the top four.

“I have difficult questions to answer and selections in the team. I have great professionals and Oli is absolutely showing that.”
