Barcelona skipper Lionel Messi has revealed why their Champions League humiliation at Liverpool still affects him.
The Catalan giants let a three-goal advantage slip in the second leg of their semi-final clash, losing 4-0 at Anfield and going down 4-3 on aggregate on an incredible night on Merseyside.
Barca also lost a commanding lead in Europe for the second successive season, and Messi revealed that the squad are still recovering ahead of the Copa del Rey final against Valencia on Saturday night.
He said: “The Liverpool game was a really hard blow for us.
“Not just for me, but for the whole squad, and it has been hard to recover from it.
“We were terrible on the night at Anfield and to lose in the same way twice in two years is not acceptable.”
The Argentina star said at the beginning of the 2017-18 season that he was determined to bring European glory back to the Camp Nou, however it was not to be.
“I didn’t promise to bring the trophy back, but I did promise to do everything I could to bring it back.
“However we were unable to do that, and we should say sorry for the performance in the second leg, because we did not even compete.”
