Midfielder ‘stunned’ by Man Utd defending in Champions League shocker

Istanbul Basaksehir midfielder Berkay Ozcan has admitted he was “stunned” by their first goal against Manchester United.

The Turkish side claimed a shock victory over United in their Champions League clash this week. The result has brought Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s position as manager into question again.

There have been rumours of contact with Mauricio Pochettino, who remains out of work since leaving Tottenham last December. However, officially, United continue to say Solskjaer has their backing.

However, he will not have been impressed with their defending against Istanbul Basaksehir. Their first goal saw them caught out by a counter attack after failing to leave markers back from a corner.

Former Chelsea striker Demba Ba went on to score having had a free run towards goalkeeper Dean Henderson. Basaksehir went on to win the game 2-1.

Now, Ozcan – who played 87 minutes of the game – has revealed how surprised he was to see the events of the first goal unfolding on the pitch.

“In that situation I was stunned for a moment, but then I didn’t really care and I just hoped Demba would get the ball in,” Ozcan told Goal and Spox.

Ozcan hoping for more Champions League success

The result has left Group H delicately balanced at the halfway stage. United still top the group on six points, but Basaksehir are only three points behind them, despite being in last place.

This is the Turkish champions’ first time playing in the group stage of the Champions League. They are also giving Ozcan the opportunity to play in the competition for the first time in his career.

And the 22-year-old wants to maintain that status of being among Europe’s elite in coming years.

“Once you’ve played the Champions League, you never want to be without it,” he said.

“You play against the best players in the world, you can measure yourself against them and see what level you are yourself.”

He is also confident that they can still “keep up in the group, as they look to chase down United, RB Leipzig and PSG.

“We have already shown against Leipzig and Paris that we can keep up.”
