Mourinho gets triple green light as January striker target nears Spurs move

Tottenham have been cleared to bring Brazilian striker Willian Jose to Tottenham this summer, according to reports in Spain.

The 28-year-old had been a January target for Mourinho’s men as late into the window as deadline day, but the Spanish club ended all hope of a last-gasp move with a twitter announcement.

The frontman had initially been earmarked as a possible Harry Kane replacement while the England number nine recovers from injury.

Spurs have often been found wanting when it comes to signing a reliable back-up to Kane, but alas, no deal was forthcoming.

The breakdown of his transfer to Tottenham even led to the player explaining the botched move.

“The truth is that I apologise to the fans for everything that has happened in recent days,” he told Marca.

“I saw that it was a very good opportunity for me to get out of here and play Champions League, with a Premier League team.

“Many things have happened, and all I have to do is apologise to the fans, the teammates and the coach, who have always trusted me.”

However, as per El Desmarque, Tottenham are now back in for Willian Jose. And this time, their hunt for the striker looks set to pay dividends.

The paper also claims three big factors are, this time, in Tottenham’s favour.

Firstly, they state Spurs chairman Daniel Levy has granted Spurs permission to sign the £54k a week star. Bringing him to the club is not likely to break the bank, while his wages are likely to be modest compared to Spurs’ top earners.

Secondly, they state the player remains keen to make the move to the Premier League after six years in LaLiga.

And finally, and perhaps key, Sociedad are, this time, finally ready to sell their talismanic frontman.

As per the report, Sociedad need to raise transfer money to fund their move for Sevilla’s Carlos Fernandez. They see the former Spain U21 international as his long-term replacement in their attack.

Willian Jose struggled for goals last season, netting just 11 in 41 appearances, and it’s believed now is the right time for a parting of ways.

According to 90min, Tottenham are also on the trail of Braga striker Paulinho as another striker option.

Ndombele given Mourinho praise

Spurs’ record signing Tanguy Ndombele, meanwhile, has been given hope of turning his career round at the club.

The Frenchman, who cost Spurs £55million from Lyon last season, flopped in a torrid first year in English football, suffering injury and fitness issues, and has been linked with a move away this summer.

Mourinho, however, has warmly praised his efforts over pre-season, suggesting he could yet find his feet at the club.

Mourinho said: “He’s working very hard. I have to be honest and say he is working better than ever. Of course he finished the season injured with a very important injury.

“He came back after holidays and of course he was still injured. That’s in spite of doing some work on the recovery process.

“He didn’t start the pre-season with us. When you saw him 45 minutes against Watford it was easy to understand and say he’s not in the best condition. But he trained only two days before that match.

“This week he did not go to the national team and trained every day. Is his condition better today than it was last week? Yes his condition is better. And he is working very, very hard.”
