Mourinho in contact as Tottenham ponder £18m move for 30-goal star

Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho has contacted Benfica to ask about the availability of midfielder Pizzi, according to a report.

Mourinho is keen to perform a squad overhaul this summer ahead of his first full season in charge. Indeed, he has already brought in Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Joe Hart.

The Portuguese boss hailed “amazing” Spurs chairman Daniel Levy for completing those deals but reports claim the manager wants five new signings in total.

According to A Bola (via Sport Witness), one player on Tottenham’s shortlist is Benfica midfielder Pizzi.

The source claims Mourinho became intrigued by reports claiming the 30-year-old, right-sided player could be available for €20million (£18million).

As such, he has taken proceedings a step further and contacted Benfica for more information on the player.

However, the Portuguese source stresses that no further development has taken place since the initial contact.

Pizzi began his career with Braga in 2007 before moving to Atletico Madrid permanently in 2012. A year later, he moved back to Portugal with Benfica and has made 281 appearances so far.

In that time, he has demonstrated a fantastic habit of contributing goals from midfield. Last season, Pizzi scored 18 goals and assisted 14 others in Portugal’s top division.

Indeed overall, he scored 30 times and laid on 19 more strikes in 51 games last term, his first season as Benfica’s captain.

In the 2018/19 season, meanwhile, the midfielder contributed to 43 goals across all competitions.

A GOOD PRICE FOR TOTTENHAM

Should Pizzi be available for £18million, that would present a decent price for Spurs given their financial restrictions.

Tottenham are working on a reduced budget due to the coronavirus pandemic and were the only Premier League side to take out a Bank of England loan earlier this year.

What’s more, the club are likely to match new signings with player sales in most instances. Indeed, Spurs sold Kyle Walker-Peters to Southampton as part of the deal for Hojbjerg.

Spurs could ratify further departures, with Serge Aurier linked with a move away.
